Wellness Pathway #234 Filter Don’t Freshen

Do you use air fresheners? According to the University of California Wellness Letter, they may be doing you more harm than good. Fresh, lemon-scented smog is still smog, even if it smells good. Better to stay with fragrance-free air filters, utilizing HEPA technology, that actually clean the air rather than to cover up bad smells with good ones.

The worst air fresheners are, unfortunately, the most popular: the pug-in variety that continuously release pine, lemon, or other chemical smells into the environments. At high levels, these chemicals can promote cancer and they can combine with ozone in the air to produce formaldehyde and other substances known to cause respiratory problems and trigger asthma attacks.

Ozone is, of course, always present in the air to some degree. But ozone can also be generated, ironically enough, by some “air-purifying” machines, marketed as generating “super-oxygen” or “mountain fresh air.” Combining “air fresheners” with those “air purifying” machines produces the exact opposite: sweet-smelling smog.

Better to stay with fragrance-free air filters that circulate the air through a series of particulate, carbon, and HEPA filters, the same filters used by NASA in outer space, in order to remove particles down to .3 microns in size. That’s small enough to remove bacteria and many viruses. Setting up one of these filters in your bedroom, let alone in your whole house, is a great way to give your body a break from environmental toxins.

Coaching Inquiries: Do you filter or freshen your air? How could you eliminate “air fresheners” and “air purifiers” from your home and work environments? What other steps could you take to reduce environmental toxins?
