What do use the Internet for? If you’re like most people, you use it for email — like this newsletter! 🙂 The second most common use of the Internet is to research products. And the third most common is to find medical information. According to a recent survey, 80 percent of U.S. adults who use the Web — that’s about 90 million people — search for guidance on topics like disease, treatments, nutrition, supplements, drugs, and even specific doctors.
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad mixed in with the good and it’s hard to tell which sites are legitimate. So I thought I would share three of my favorite sites.
- www.DrWeil.com is where I start when I have a health question. Their searchable archive is great and I appreciate their integrated perspective on conventional and alternative medicine. DrWeil.com is owned and operated by Polaris Health, LLC, a Phoenix, Arizona-based holding company founded by Andrew Weil, M.D. The site notes that, “All of Dr Weil’s after-tax profits from products and services derived from Polaris Health, LLC go directly to the Polaris Foundation, a nonprofit foundation supporting Dr. Weil’s dream of advancing the cause of Integrative Medicine and optimum health around the world.”
- www.Nutri-Facts.com is where I turn for nutrition information. Want to know what you’re eating? This site does it all, providing nutrition information on almost six thousand different foods in addition to common restaurant foods. The information is provided in a format that looks like a “Nutrition Facts” label, making it very easy to read and understand. They also have extensive and frequently updated links to the latest news articles on fitness, health, natural health, food and drink, public health, and medicine.
- www.HalHigdon.com is where I turn for fitness information. If you have any thought of training for a footrace of any distance, from a 5K up to and beyond a marathon, this site has what you need to begin — regardless of where you’re starting. From the beginner who has never run a step to the experienced pro who wants to set a personal best, this site will challenge and educate you with training schedules and even a virtual coach.
