Wellness Pathway #214 Be Scentsible

No, I did not misspell the word “sensible.” I created a new word to indicate the importance of thinking sensibly about the scents in your environment.

Did you know that 95% of the chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum? They include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and many other known potentially toxic substances — capable of causing cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.

No wonder so many people have trouble coping with perfumes, fragrances, and scents. And we find them everywhere, including detergents, fabric softeners, shampoo, conditioners, air fresheners, deodorizers, cosmetics, perfumes, candles, hair spray, nail polish, and paper products not to mention tobacco smoke.

Headaches, sinusitis, asthma, nausea, and vomiting are five of the most common problems they can cause. Even when the scents are natural, they can cause problems. Fresh flowers, for example, may look and smell pretty but they may also cause both sinus and eye problems.

If you are scent-sensitive, then it behooves you to become scentsible. Choose fragrance-free products. If you want scents in your environment, choose natural aromas that do not provoke allergic reactions. And if you are someone who enjoys fragrances, learn to accommodate those who may be otherwise irritated (both physically and emotionally) by the scents you wear and use. This is not just a matter of personal preference. For many, it’s a matter of life and breath.

Coaching Inquiries: Are you scent-sensitive? Is your home a safe place to live and breathe? How could you eliminate some of the additives in your environment?
