Wellness Pathway #194 Get Your Hearing Tested

Speaking of listening to hurricanes and other living things, when was the last time you had your hearing tested? Probably not for a while, if you’re like most people. Most doctors, according to a recent review article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, do not test for hearing loss as a part of routine physicals or other procedures. Yet the tests are simple, inexpensive, and painless, beginning with a questionnaire.

Have you begun to wonder why people are always mumbling and the television is hard to understand? Have you started to ask people to repeat things? The problem may be with your ears. Even if you don’t think you have a problem, a hearing test can be useful in establishing a baseline and tracking potential hearing loss. It is thought that up to 40% of those over 65 have some hearing impairment, and many people in their 40s are already suffering hearing loss from years of living in noisy environments.

So get yourself tested. If you need to see an audiologist for more advanced testing than your regular doctor may be able to provide, insurance may cover the expense. Hearing correction can make a real difference in how you experience the world.

Coaching Inquiries: When was the last time you had your hearing tested? Do you have reservations about wearing a hearing aide or other prosthetic device? What would it mean for you to hear well?
