Wellness Pathway #185 Make Exercise Easy

Many people never figure out how to exercise daily. They want to do the work, but there is always something getting in the way. I remember one client who enjoyed cycling but did not get out as much as he would like. In talking about the situation, he described how his bike was stored behind a pile of boxes in the back of his garage. “It takes so much work to get it out and put it back,” he explained, “that I often just don’t bother.”

The solution? He moved his bike into a more convenient location and suddenly exercise became easy. Each of us can probably make similar adjustments. I know one person who preferred walking as her daily exercise. But when she moved to a new home, she got out of the habit. In talking about the situation, she described how she did not have a sense of good, safe places to walk in her new neighborhood.

The solution? She drove around the neighborhood, charting out different routes replete with mileages that she spray painted on the road. Now she’s back to walking daily, including a log as to time walked and distance covered. Another client was an avid photographer. He found that carrying his camera with him on his walks was enough to get him out the door.

Exercise is challenging enough. We don’t need to make it harder by having environments that work against us. Fortunately, environments can be modified so they support rather than hinder our best intentions.

Coaching Inquiries: Do you have excuses for not exercising daily? Can you find clues in those excuses for environmental modifications that would turn this around? What actions would you need to take?
