Wellness Pathway #181 Sit Up Straight!

How many times did you hear your mother say those words, “Sit up straight!” It turns out she was on to something and not just being a nag. Poor posture can lead to all kinds of health problems. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, these problems can include “impaired breathing, musculoskeletal pain, and fatigue. Poor posture can cause wear and tear on the joints — and that increases the risk of osteoarthritis. It can also interfere with sleep and digestion, and saps your energy.”

We can, of course, have poor posture in any position. With a bad mattress, it’s even possible to have poor posture in bed! But sitting and standing are two times when poor posture can be easily recognized and controlled. Are your shoulders hunched over? Is your neck arched forward or backward? Is your stomach protruding? Are your legs and feet twisted or bent? It’s easy to check these things, once you become aware of them, and to make adjustments. Roll your shoulder blades back. Straighten your neck. Tuck in your stomach. Uncross your legs and plant your feet firmly on the ground.

Go through this routine every 30 to 45 minutes. If you spend a lot of time at a computer, you may want to program a reminder that will pop up at regular intervals to remind you to “sit up straight.” In addition, you will want to maintain a daily routine of exercise and breathwork that will strengthen your muscles and promote good posture throughout the day.
