Wellness Pathway #176 Practice Those Kegels

Query: How much do Americans spend each year on adult diapers? Answer: More than $5.2 billion dollars. At the same time, Americans spend even more than that on prescription and over-the-counter remedies for sexual dysfunction. Could this perhaps be due, at least in part, to a loss of pelvic floor muscle tone?

Query: What’s one exercise you can do anytime, anywhere in any clothes without anyone knowing you’re doing the work? Answer: Pelvic floor resistance training, commonly known as Kegels (after the medical doctor who identified the problem and developed the exercise routine). They’re really quite simple. Kegels amount to constricting and releasing the same muscles that you would use to stop the flow of urine, midstream. It’s recommended that you do that several times a day to help build those muscles. It’s also recommended that you do about a hundred squeezes a day, at other times during the day, for the rest of your life. Contract them tightly and release them fully for 5 seconds, 12 times, at least 8 times a day.

Strengthening these muscles have many direct and indirect benefits for both men and women. Incontinence, for example, often leads to sleep deprivation and daytime drowsiness. Strengthening these muscles may just enable you to sleep better and, in turn, to live a longer and healthier life. So the next time you’re sitting in a meeting, driving down the highway, standing in the shower, talking on the phone, or resting between reps on the weight bench why not practice those Kegels? They are simple exercises that have the power to make a lot of things better.
