Wellness Pathway #164: Enjoy Life

It came as no surprise, but researchers reporting in the February 2003 issue of the American Journal of Public Health found a direct correlation between health and involvement in the arts and recreational entertainment. This particular study looked at children’s health. The more time and money people spent on the arts and recreational entertainment, the healthier their children were. In other words, as one headline summarized the report, kids who have fun are healthier.

Other studies have demonstrated the same phenomenon in adults. The better we feel emotionally, the more we enjoy life, the better we feel physically. Even an active and satisfying sex life has been correlated to better physical and emotional health. Now we learn that doing other things we love has a measurable impact on health and longevity. Involvement in the arts and recreational entertainment are great stress relievers. That’s certainly part of their power. But it’s also true that anything that gets our bodies moving, hearts pumping, and minds going will just about always generate positive health effects. So don’t scrimp on arts, culture, and entertainment. Think of it as an investment in health.
