Wellness Pathway #154: Avoid Fried Foods

This tip is so basic, fundamental, and important to good health that I was surprised to find it missing from the Wellness Pathway archive. Fried foods deliver a triple-decker threat to good health. First, they are loaded with unhealthy fat. Even healthy fats turn unhealthy when they are heated to high temperatures. Fried foods, especially deep-fried foods such as French fries and potato chips, stress the cardiovascular system. Given our love of fried foods, it’s no wonder that heart disease has become such a widespread health problem.

Second, most fried foods made from potatoes and grains are high-calorie, high-glycemic foods that contribute to weight gain and adult-onset diabetes. As the commercials say, it’s hard to have just one. Finally, recent studies coming out of Sweden and now being corroborated in the USA and other countries, suggest that fried and baked food products, such as French fries, potato chips, and crackers, contain high levels of the potentially cancer causing substance acrylamide. Although the US FDA has not yet made any recommendations to avoid fried and baked foods as potential carcinogens, why take a chance? Three strikes, as they say in baseball, and you’re out.
