Wellness Pathway #137: Take Fish Oil

The message of the past 30 years is clear: low-fat foods do not make for low-fat people. There are more weight problems today than ever before. The secret to good health is not minimizing but balancing our consumption of fat. Most people in the developed world eat far too much saturated, trans, and omega-6 type fats (lurking in animal, dairy, deep-fried, and hydrogenated vegetable products) and far too little omega-3 type fats (found in fish, flax seeds, walnuts, canola, and dark-green leaves).

To achieve a better balance, and better health, lower your consumption of the fats that kill and increase your consumption of the fats that heal. One easy way is to take fish oil capsules. In a recent study, men who survived a heart attack and who took 1 gram (or 1,000 mg) of fish oil per day were 53% less likely to die of sudden death than survivors who were given a placebo. Be sure to get a high-quality brand with lots of the fatty acids known as EPA and DHA. Take them immediately after eating in order to minimize gastric problems. This little action can produce big results for men and women alike.
