Wellness Pathway #105: Eat Flax Seed for Health & Weight Control

The secret to health and weight control is not an extremely low-fat diet. At the same time as food manufacturers have reduced the fat in their products, food consumers have increased the fat in their bodies. There is a connection here. The burgeoning problem of obesity in the developed world is due to the lack of healthy fat in our diets. And it’s not just the obesity that’s killing people. The ratio of unhealthy fats (saturated fats and hydrogenated fats) to healthy fats (monounsaturated fats and low-chain polyunsaturated fats) is so out of whack that we are also seeing an epidemic of diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, and mental illness. 

The solution? Two tablespoons of ground flax seed every morning. Buy them at your local health food store. The golden seeds are better than the brown ones, but either will do. Store them in the refrigerator and grind them in a coffee grinder just prior to using. Sprinkle them on your cereal or mix them in a fruit smoothie. They will improve the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats in your body, reduce your food cravings through out the day, keep you regular, boost immunity, and provide significant health benefits. To quote Mahatma Gandhi: “Wherever flax seed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health.”
