Career Pathway #186: Growing Perspective

My mind keeps wandering back to the people and situations in Louisiana and Mississippi in the last two weeks. I never seem to be very far away from the stories, pictures, and video I have been seeing on TV, in the papers, and online. And, I am finding that all of these perspectives have surfaced my values, emotion, and need to be a part of the help that is so desperately called for at this time.

While these events have unfolded, we’ve all had the opportunity to wonder, “What would I do in that situation?” “If I lost everything, where would I be?” “Should I find members of my family gone, how would I survive and move on to some semblance of life without them?” All are heart-wrenching and extremely difficult questions, which most certainly take us to our basic elements and values.

As these elements and values pop into your consciousness, I encourage you to find some time to ponder them. Sit with them a while and see what’s there. Do your thoughts reflect a need to spend more time with those you love? Perhaps, you want to shore up some financial or insurance details. You may be thinking about your health or the health of family members. Or, your thoughts may rest on simplifying and making improvements based on your primary values and desires for your life, and the lives of those around you.

Whatever the emotion or thought, give it some space and let it expand. See what is there before you let it go. It is at these times, when great decisions and life movement can be made, new efforts taken up, and secondary activities dismissed while forming a more meaningful and dedicated future.
