Career Pathway #160: Who Do You Want To Be?

Much of the career coaching I do has an element of work satisfaction in it. Many of us are seeking to be happier and more fulfilled in our work lives as well as professional lives. And, what I have found is that there is great power in addressing the question, “who do you want to be?”

We can get so wrapped up in the position title, salary and bonus potential, challenges, and politics that we lose sight of the choices we have in deciding the very basics of who we are and how we express ourselves.

So I encourage you to step back and look at who you are being. What is truly important to you? What are your values as a unique human being? Are you being the professional, the friend, the parent, the team member, the manager, the leader whom you want to be?

If you value humor, are you bringing fun and laughter into your environment? If you value kindness, are you being kind to those whose paths you cross? If you value honesty, are you being honest in your communications? If you value individual contribution, are you contributing your strengths and gifts and supporting coworkers to do the same?

I believe that our fulfillment comes as much from the being of ourselves, as it does from the job responsibilities, amenities, and position. Take some time to get in touch with your core values and commit to expressing more of who you want to be. You may find new joy in that self expression, and a more meaningful way of enhancing your professional satisfaction.
