I have spent the past week at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York
State (ciweb.org). This 130-year-old
institution features a nine-week summer season with a rich selection of
educational, artistic, spiritual, cultural, and recreational opportunities. My
family and I have visited the Institution each summer since 1994 as part of our
pattern for personal and family renewal.
The theme for this past week was "Getting Well, Staying Well, Being Well," and I
had the opportunity to speak to about 50 people on Tuesday afternoon on the
topic of Wellness Coaching. During my speech, I asked everyone to submit the
answers to two questions on 3x5 index cards:
- What is one great thing that you do every day for your own health and
wellness?
- What is one great thing that you could start doing every day for your own
health and wellness?
The answers were predictable, fun, and a wonderful demonstration of how much
wisdom people already have regarding their own health and wellness. No wonder
coaching works! We just have to draw that wisdom out and make it stick.
Here were some of the answers people gave as to the great things they were
already doing:
- I walk and move my body a lot; I swim; I ride my bike; I dance salsa.
- I take my medicine; I take my vitamins.
- I laugh and smile.
- I meditate in the morning; I pray; I do yoga.
- I sleep well.
- I eat a healthy diet, avoiding partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and
high-fructose corn syrup.
- I have hobbies; I knit; I practice piano.
My answer to that query was that I love my wife. You can imagine my delight,
therefore, when the wellness experts who spoke at Chautauqua consistently lifted
up the importance of love to good health. Research demonstrates that the more we
love the ones we're with, including those in our network of family and friends,
the stronger our immune system, the happier we are, and the longer we live.
As regular readers of these Pathways know, wellness is not just about nutrition
and exercise. It has to do with everything that goes into a well-lived life,
including the power of love.
Coaching Inquiries: Do you have enough close, positive, and loving relationships
in your life to experience the health benefits of love? How you could you raise
the love quotient in your life? What interventions could make things better?
