Wellness Pathway #195
Avoid High-Fructose Corn Syrup

In other Wellness Pathways I have written about the importance of reading labels. There are some things that I go out of my way to avoid. These include hydrogenated vegetable oils, artificial sweeteners (such as aspartame and saccharine), and high-fructose corn syrup.

In Wellness Pathway #165, Click, I wrote about the dangers of trans-fatty acids, contained in all hydrogenated vegetable oils such as margarine and other popular spreads. These fats are at least as dangerous, and perhaps more dangerous, to your cardiovascular health than the saturated fats found in butter and other animal fats. To avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are everywhere in the modern food supply, you have to read labels or ask for the information.

The same is true for high-fructose corn syrup. Like hydrogenated vegetable oils, high-fructose corn syrup is an invention of the 20th century. Before that time, for millions and billions of years, no animal on earth had ever eaten either one. Today they have become staples of the diet, and the jury is still out as to their long-term effects. We know increasingly about the health hazards of hydrogenated vegetable oils. We are still learning about high-fructose corn syrup.

One thing is clear, high-fructose corn syrup -- invented by Japanese scientists in the early 1970s -- is "a contributing factor to obesity," notes Dr. Andrew Weil, "since the public may be less conscious of calories from added sugars than those from dietary fat." As a cheap sweetener, high-fructose corn syrup enables "fast-food food manufacturers to increase portion sizes without raising prices." And Dr. Weil has concerns about the metabolic effects of high-fructose corn syrup such as raised triglycerides (blood fats) as well as increased insulin resistance and blood glucose levels.

Although this Wellness Pathway requires vigilance and diligence, since it takes work and constant attention to eliminate them from our diet, it may be no less important to our long-term health and well-being. Stay with whole, unrefined foods and complex carbohydrates. Your body and soul will be glad you did.

Coaching Inquiries: Do you read labels and ask about the ingredients in foods that don't have labels? How much high-fructose corn syrup do you consume on a regular basis? How can you become more health conscious and aware?
