Wellness Pathway #114:

Want to live a longer, healthier life? There's one
surefire approach: eat less. And here's the best news of all: it's never too
late to start. Last September The Washington Post reported on the proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences: putting elderly mice on a very low-calorie
diet for as little as four weeks reversed many of the changes in the activity of
various genes that had occurred during normal aging, lowered the incidence of
cancer, delayed the onset of other age-related diseases, and prolonged their
lives. Clinical trials in human beings are now underway, to determine the exact benefits of a low-calorie diet, but no one argues with the notion that a low-calorie diet is better than a high-calorie diet. Time and again, high-calorie diets are proven to account for many health problems -- most notably Type II diabetes. In this week's Provision (Click) I mention the Diet and Exercise Assistant. That's one way to stay on top of what you're eating. Another way is to periodically fast for a meal or a day. That's a great solution when you're at a function where there's simply nothing healthy to eat. However you do it, as long as you don't become anorexic, eating less will improve your well-being.
