I have to give credit to my five year old daughter for this Resilience Pathway.
She's too little to realize that when she said these five little words: "Try it
with a smile," she had a special impact not only on me but also on a few of my
clients.
While trying on a dress for a special corporate reunion, my daughter noticed by
my facial expressions that I was struggling to find the right outfit for this
big event. As I was looking in the mirror, she said to me softly, "Try it with a
smile." Confused I said, "What do you mean?" She then said, "Try your dress on
with a smile."
How cool is that! I got to take the "I don't feel so good about going to this
event" look off my face, which was my exact perspective at the moment, and look
at myself in the mirror with a smile on my face. She, of course, made me laugh
long enough for me to catch a glimpse of my smiling face in the mirror and to
realize that I was going to enjoy this event since I had now found the "perfect
dress" (aka a far more productive perspective).
The shift in my perspective was about much more than what to wear. It was about
my frame of mind regarding this reunion. A simple smile shifted the way I was
thinking and feeling about seeing people I had worked with 14 years ago. I
carried that smile with me the night of the event as well as my new found
perspective. Needless to say, I had a ball, connected with former colleagues,
and allowed myself to take in the precious moments, leaving my "I don't feel so
good about going to this event" perspective on the floor in the dressing room.
This technique can not only work for matters like how we're thinking or feeling
about an event, it can also help when it comes to significant matters like a
business presentation, life decisions, relationship issues, financial and health
matters, and so on. Consider for a moment what not-so-productive perspectives
you're carrying with you. Pick one and then think of the situation or issue with
an authentic smile on your face. Now look in the mirror. Did a shift happen for
you? If so, what perspective was inspired by your shift?
Coaching Inquiries: How often do you try on a smile in a given day? How often do
you try on a smile when you notice you're wearing an unproductive perspective?
What shift can happen for you if you simply try it with a smile?
