Just over two years ago, I renewed my own personal wellness journey. After over
five years of marriage and bearing two children, my wellness renewal was long
overdue.
I was inspired by my sister and my neighbor. My sister was a few months into
renewing her physical and mental wellness when I found her daily dedication to
improved nutrition and exercise to be contagious. Her positive changes were that
noticeable. So too with my neighbor, who was 4 years into working out with a
personal trainer 3-5 times a week. At the age of 41, she has the body, energy,
and beauty of a 27-year-old.
After two years of healthy eating habits and exercise, including 5-6 days a week
of cardio, strength training, and Pilates, I've now lost 28 pounds -- bringing my
weight down to 120 lbs. The weight loss is a great reward for my hard work,
however, I find even more fulfillment in seeing those close to me who have
recently begun their own wellness renewal.
I see my parents eating healthier by choosing fiber-rich whole grains, fruit,
and vegetables over pasta. This is a big accomplishment for an Italian family
where meals are central, daily events! Also, my sister-in-law trained for and ran her first
marathon this past June, losing weight and growing fit in the process.
But I'm most touched by seeing my husband begin to take interest in his
wellness. Although I've never known him to exercise, a few weeks ago he ran his
first half marathon after six weeks of training, finishing in just over 2 hours.
He's continuing his wellness journey by planning to run the Columbus Marathon this October.
Each day brings me fulfillment when friends, neighbors, and strangers ask me
what I do to stay in shape, what I eat, and if I'm starving myself. I laugh at
the "starving myself" question because by eating six small meals a day, I'm
never hungry and I'm actually eating more now than I did in an average day two
years ago, but I'm also burning far more calories as well.
I contribute much of my success and motivation to what I call "the ripple
effect." I can see clearly that my dedication to wellness is influencing and
shaping others in and around my life.
