Richard Carson, author of Taming Your Gremlin, is the creator of this
Gremlin concept. You may not be delighted to learn that everyone has their very
own personal, unique, and self-customized Gremlin. But the concept does have a
lot teach us.
The Gremlin reminds us to maintain the status quo in our lives. He, she, or it
is our personal inner critique who works very hard to dis-empower us as we
consider making desired changes in our lives. He, she, or it is the inner voice
that sometimes whispers faintly and other times yells in our ears all that we
should or need to do / be in life. The Gremlin effortlessly provides us with a
personalized moment by moment performance review and really loves to highlight
where we "dropped the ball."
It is important for us to know that any negative self-talk is served up to us
from our Gremlin. The Gremlin disguises himself / herself / itself as a
structure that seems to be trying to protect us. In actuality, the Gremlin gets
in the way of our moving toward what we really want.
Do you desire a fulfilled and balanced life where you are enjoying the process
of life along the way? Who doesn't! But you can count on the Gremlin to trip you
up or even to distract you from beginning this pursuit of happiness.
The not-so-good news is that the Gremlin will always have a voice that we will
consciously or unconsciously notice. The good news is that the Gremlin loses its
grip on us as we get to know it better and once we begin to identify it for what
it is. Simply getting to know our Gremlin's tendencies and being aware of when
the Gremlin is "speaking" is the first step. To start getting to know your
Gremlin, try asking yourself these coaching questions:
What does my Gremlin typically say to me? How often do I notice my Gremlin? How
would I describe my Gremlin? What is my Gremlin protecting me from? What goals
and dreams does my Gremlin keep me from realizing?
