This has been a week of good-byes, new introductions, packing, purging,
planning, closure, coaching, being coached, celebrating, reconnecting, learning,
and contemplating. That is almost too much for one week, but in a way, it has
had some exhilaration to it. Sometimes the river is really flowing, and the best
thing to do is to pay attention and enjoy the ride.
I have done a pretty good job of staying in each moment, and maintaining some
focus. This has allowed me to enjoy most all of it, and to land on some
satisfactory results. Its hard to enjoy an activity if your thinking is darting
around to other things, deadlines, and pressures.
Manufacturing such satisfaction has much to do with knowing what is important to
you, and where you place your priorities. It may take a little saying "no" or
negotiating a later date. It may mean sacrificing perfection in one area to
commit the time needed for a more crucial deliverable. It may take some
creativity, flexibility, and stretching. But, if done for the things and people
you hold as priorities, then it generally is well worth it and leads to greater
life satisfaction.
So help your friends celebrate their milestone birthdays (Jon), cheer on your
coworkers who are realizing the goals theyve set for themselves (Namara), purge
the physical stuff that is creating clutter, pay attention to the coaching you
receive from supportive colleagues (Tammy and Molly), and be open to the new
ideas and possibilities that come your way. Whatever your priorities, they
should be elevated and paid attention to as you face choices and options. The
path is then clearer, easier, more meaningful and joyful.
I am sending a "shout out" to my nieces, Katie and Megan, who each received job
offers recently. They are great examples of focus, persistence, and being
committed to their priorities. Both have followed their interests, leading them
into advanced study and challenging exams. And now, we celebrate!
My step-son, Eric, is visiting us this weekend, and we enjoyed steak on the
grill last night, with roasted ears of corn and a healthy salad. Life is good.
Marks Grilled Steak
Marinade (Depending on the size of meat you get, you may need to double or
triple)
1 to 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
Garlic powder or minced garlic to taste
Onion powder or minced onion to taste
Several twists of black pepper through a pepper grinder
Flat-iron steak ask the butcher if you dont see it in the case. Its
lean, tender, and always de-lish really. Cut it in serving size pieces
and marinate for at least 30 minutes, then grill. Brush the remaining
marinade onto the meat as it is grilling.
Coaching Inquiries: Do you think about your priorities as the
week heats up? Are you willing to stand "by your guns" in deciding what
commitments to make? How do you keep your focus in order to give your important
projects and activities your full attention? Do you schedule time for yourself
and those you hold dear? If these actions are challenging for you, what changes
are you willing to make to move in that direction?
