Given my passion to uncover one's creativity, I often work with clients who have
a dream of writing. More specifically, they dream of being "A Writer." In the
minds of many, being "A Writer" is a mysterious and romantic business. Writers
are thought to be genius and pained artists, sitting atop a mountain, with hours
to ponder and perfect their craft.
But not many of us have the opportunity to retreat to a hideaway and spend our
days with our thoughts, so we need to construct some new beliefs about writing
and, more specifically, who can be granted that coveted title, "A Writer."
I often encourage my clients to give themselves the gift of reading Julia
Cameron's "The Right to Write," a book that actively engages the reader in the
act of embracing their gifts while dispelling the myths about writing.
Here are some of the paradigm shifts clients have made through reading and
coaching conversations. These shifts have enabled these talented artists to see
themselves as writers, regardless of time, environment and financial resources.
- There is no "perfect" time to write. There is always
something to say and anytime I have a writing utensil in hand is a good time
to say it.
- I won't postpone writing until the thoughts and ideas
come to me; I will write until I find my way to them.
- There is no magic to writing; it's simply putting my
thoughts into a different space and form.
- I am willing to write badly; I relieve myself of the
pressure to create the perfect product and will enjoy the journey.
- I don't have to be "in the mood" to write to begin; I
will begin and, through the writing, will create my mood.
- I love to write. I don't have to make the process
mysterious and difficult; I can choose to approach it with ease.
- And lastly, a thought from one of my favorite authors,
our own Bob Tschannen-Moran, "Choose a topic about which you know nothing
and write." Embrace the joy of learning about a fascinating topic and
recording your discoveries in writing.
