I've recently become aware of the bountiful inspiration that accompanies
kindness. Whenever I witness acts of kindness, from the anonymous (someone
leaving extra pennies at the mechanical pony for children to enjoy) to the
intimate (a loving, handwritten note to express gratitude for the sharing of
gifts) I find my mind swelling with ideas for ways that I too could be more
kind. I begin to imagine ways, both big and small, that I could create that same
warm feeling for others. Kindness begets creativity.
Kindness also improves our emotional state. In his book The Healing Power of Doing
Good: The Health and Spiritual Benefits of Helping Others, author Allan Luks
cites that the rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm, after
performing a kind act is often referred to as a "helper's high." This involves
measurable physical sensations and the release of the body's natural painkillers
called "endorphins." Better yet, this initial "high" is followed by a
longer-lasting period of improved emotional well-being.
Famous for the satirical cartoon series Dilbert, creator Scott Adams
wisely said, "Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every
act creates a ripple with no logical end." Kindness is inspirational! The next
time you find yourself in an emotional, spiritual or creative rut, try kindness.
Participate in a random act of kindness and create an experience for both
receiver and giver.
