Time to Change the Channel?

 When I was 5 months pregnant, I noticed
every other pregnant woman within a one mile radius; I could pick a pregnant woman out of a crowd of 200. My radar
was finely tuned to notice anyone in the same biological state as my own.
Several years ago, when I was thinking about buying a new car and had decided on
just the perfect one, I suddenly noticed every car on the road of that same make
and model. They had been there all along, I'm sure, but I had never noticed them
before.
Recently, I attended a study group with the intention of finding the answer
to a question that had been with me for the past two days. Sure enough, the
topic of the study was exactly what I had been looking for.
If I told you to look around your room and find five blue objects, it is likely
that you could do it easily. And, my guess is that you would notice the blue in
objects that you had not seen until now.
The fact that our attention is selective, and that we are uniquely tuned to find
whatever it is that we are looking for, can be both a blessing and a curse.
Staying on one "channel" enables a laser focus. Like the pregnant woman in the
room, things become more obvious. When we "tune" our minds to receiving certain
information, it seems to begin coming at us from everywhere.
But staying on one "channel" can also limit our ability to stretch the mind and
embrace the gift of seeing a different perspective. For example, when I am
focused on negativity -- anger, disappointment, worry -- I continue to tune into
more instances of anger, disappointment and worry. When we choose only to gather
information with our senses (rather than exploring our hunches), or only to make
decisions based on logic (rather than weighing our emotions), we eliminate the
possibility for the best conclusions. If we only seek the "right" answer, we are
closed to the reality that there are many, many answers.
Coaching Challenge and Inquiries: Know what channel you have tuned into. Are you
missing out on an insight, thing of beauty, or inspiration that is right before
you? On what have you consciously, or unconsciously, chosen to focus? If you
determined to find a completely different perspective, how might it enrich your
thinking?
