Through my work with children, I have the opportunity to witness many
interactions between students and teachers. While these interactions are usually
positively inspiring, they are, on occasion, maddeningly uninspiring.
It was in a preschool classroom, for example, that I observed a young boy being
reprimanded for coloring outside of the lines in his coloring book. As a
Creativity Coach, and artist, you could guess that I was horrified at the
situation.
Such is the way in much of our adult experience, where our creativity is stilted
by our own inability to color outside of the lines. We become trapped by habits
and routines. We let others dictate our potential and we do not take time to
dream.
Pablo Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain
an artist after growing up." One strategy for rediscovering the child-like
creativity in you is to practice asking "What if?" questions. Asking "What if?"
questions frees your mind of the walls you put around it, while at the same time
allowing it to stretch and explore.
Here are some "What if?" questions to get you started:
- What if life imitates art?
- What if children ruled the world?
- What if music did not exist?
- What if red were green?
Coaching Challenge: First, create your own set of "What If"
questions. Then, take your brain one step further, and answer your own "What
Ifs." What if this exercise solved the challenge you are facing right now?
