Career Pathway #101: Powerful Self Talk

Our self-talk and beliefs are powerful partners in steering our lives. If you believe you are capable of something, and you regularly tell yourself that you will achieve it, you are mentally positioned to go after it. Hence the saying, “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

Pay attention to your mental chatter, letting go of that which does not serve your goals. Then replace it with thoughts of achieving your desired action, and receiving the results you want. The success of these phenomena has been proven many times over. If you believe, you will achieve and receive. Go for it!

Coaching Inquiries: What are the tapes that play in your head? Do you hold on to self-limiting beliefs? How could you coach yourself to more powerful self talk?

Career Pathway #102: A Time to Be, A Time to Do

Many times when we think of accomplishment and achievement, we associate them with “doing” sorts of things • taking action. And although many goals require action steps, there is a time to focus on one’s “being.” It is in the “being” part of life, that we become quiet, introspective, and learned about whom we really are and the essence of what we truly want.

People frequently seek a coach for the purpose of holding their “feet to the fire,” by checking up on them each week to be sure tasks are completed. However, there is a far richer relationship to be had in coaching, when the conversation begins with values, personality, dreams, and authenticity. Applying this awareness in the process illuminates the true desires and clarifies the path.

Reach deep within yourself to explore and expand your understanding of self before committing to action. This will ensure both a more enjoyable journey, and a more rewarding result.

Career Pathway #103: Take The Risk To Blossom

Every time I forget that we are designed for greatness, the universe seeks to remind me. Each time I lose faith in the connectedness of people, just the right person enters my life. Whenever I get stuck in an unproductive way of being, I am nudged to reach out and take a risk.

I will sometimes see a person and get an instinctive feeling that I should reach out to them. Many times I will ignore that whisper, aimed with proper reasons like, “I’m too shy•,” “I don’t have time•,” “They can’t be bothered•,”

But last week, in the grocery store, I listened. After passing a woman in the aisles several times, we ended up in the check-out line together. Though it was completely outside of my introverted comfort zone, I felt compelled to introduce myself to her and to tell her about my work as a teacher of music and movement classes for young children. As we quickly discovered connection after connection, coincidence after coincidence, it became clear that something greater was at work that day.

My experience can be summarized eloquently by Anais Nin, “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” What do you look like when you are in full blossom?

Career Pathway #104: Be Alive and Well

As I am poking around in my flowerbeds, finding the perfect spot for new perennials and lovingly admiring the growth from the bulbs I planted last fall, I am bringing new life into my day. When we make time for the fun, loving, creative, and inspirational activities we enjoy, we give an energy jolt to our being. Regular jolts of this energy provide precious lifts to our spirit and psyches, raising our stamina and promoting our overall well-being.

Make a conscious choice this spring, to expand your days with regular energy lifts. Wake up in the morning with an intention to give yourself some creative time, to relax and share some humor, to connect with an inspirational poem or book, or breathe in the sights and sounds of nature on a hike in the park. Only you can best know the experiences and activities that bring you alive. Seek them out, and allow yourself to indulge.

In feeding your energy level, you may find yourself expanding your life in general. Be alive and well!

Career Pathway #105: Goal Setting 101

As a coach, prospective clients often come to me seeking a partner in working toward their goals. Some of them come with flashy goals mapped out on Gantt charts and plugged in to their daily planners for three months forward. Others come with simple statements, phrased more like wish lists.

Whatever form they take, goals without connection to an individual’s life purpose are goals written in a vacuum, usually resulting in stalled or unmet goals. Goals unconnected to a person’s values are often goals too influenced by Gremlins (the distracting and debilitating inner voice that tells one what they “should” be doing or “should never” dream to do), limited perspectives, or others’ points of view. As critical as goals are to success and the pursuit of fulfillment, commitment to the wrong goals can contribute to continued and perplexing feelings of failure, imbalance and emptiness.

In First Things First, guru of habits and people-effectiveness, Stephen Covey, supports this theory: “Goals that are connected to our inner life have the power of passion and principle. They’re fueled by the fire within and based on ‘true north’ principles that create quality of life results•without this deep connection, we go through life feeling duty-bound to develop sufficient self-control to achieve our goals, to endure to the end, to crawl battered and bruised over the finish line, if it’s the last thing we do.”

The key to successful goal achievement is setting the right goals in the first place. If you find yourself struggling to meet your goals, perhaps it is time to question from where the goals came.

Coaching Inquiries: Whose goals are you working on? How are they connected to your values? How do you feel when you are working on your goals (excited, drained, fulfilled, etc.)?

Career Pathway #106: Having Fun Yet?!

What reasons do you have for not allowing fun into your daily life?

Too busy?
Too serious?
Too many negatives in your life?

All the more reason to say a resounding “yes!” to FUN and all of its benefits. Besides a more enjoyable existence, you can reduce your stress (and its wear and tear on your body), improve relationships, and raise your energy. I’ve also noticed that when someone introduces fun into their workplace or home life, those around them benefit from all of the improvements, as well.

Give yourself the gift of fun, and give it to others around you in the process. You’ll be glad you lightened up, and lightened your load. And, so will others in your life.

Coaching Inquiries: How regularly do you have fun? Is it enough? Are you getting the release you need from the stresses and hustle of life? Would your life be better with more fun?

Career Pathway #107: Picture Your Gremlin

Gremlins, most commonly known as fairy tale creatures to be blamed for things that are broken, lost or misplaced, are also symbolic of our broken, lost or misplaced dreams. You have probably had a sense of these mysterious creatures your whole life. These Gremlins are the narrators in your head; the voices that whisper “Don’t even think about it•;” the voices that scream “You should•you need to•you must.”

These Gremlins are in your self-doubt, your second thoughts, your hesitations and your fears. Gremlins take away energy, sabotage hope and lower our expectations with the goal of quieting the real, vibrant you.

In my next series of “Snacks” we will shed light on these shadow creatures so that you may begin to detect the presence of your Gremlin, differentiate yourself from him or her and make more conscious choices.

Coaching Challenge: Create a visual representation of your Gremlin • a rough sketch of what this creature looks like. How does he or she look when he or she is speaking to you?

Career Pathway #108: What Is Your Mission?

There comes a point in many lives when the question of “vocation” pops up. This is when each person asks, “What work am I meant to do on earth?” And, often the answer is not the job we are now performing. In fact, it may be a far cry from the career we have built.

The answer to that meaningful question lies in our passions, strengths, and personal mission. Sometimes, that answer may come easily, however, often it does not. Finding it may require great introspection, discernment, time, and a commitment to the process.

Clues to identifying vocation for yourself may live in the activities which bring you joy, in the assignments/tasks you get excited about, in the value and support you bring to others’ lives, or in the message you are compelled to share with the world.

If you are at a point in your life where you are seeking your vocation, find some time for introspection, consideration, and planning. Your answer lies in your values and true essence. And undoubtedly, it will come to you when you are in a mindset of acceptance and openness. Give yourself some quiet time and listen to your guidance–your answer is there.

Coaching Inquiries: What work are you compelled to do in this world? What specific gifts do you want to share with others? Is there a voice calling to you in your quiet moments? Where is it leading you?

Coaching Opportunities: If you want to pursue this matter further, with some free vocation coaching, please email me. Appointments are on a first come-first served basis, and are available on Wednesday and Thursday, June 18 and 19, on the hour beginning at 9:00 am Eastern until 4:00 PM each day.

I would also like to hear from you regarding the process of identifying your vocation. I’d like to know how you came to the knowing of what you were called to do, the path you took in getting there, the quality of your work satisfaction, and the gifts/personal strengths you are utilizing. All information will be kept confidential, so please email me with your stories.

Career Pathway #109: Notice Your Gremlins

In my last snack, you were introduced to the concept of the Gremlin, an inner critic and self-saboteur. I presented you a challenge to create a visual representation of the Gremlin and to consider what it is you hear when the Gremlin is speaking to you.

Author Richard Carson says that the first step in the process of taming your Gremlin is creating an awareness of and simply noticing it. Noticing is not the same thing as thinking about your Gremlin. “Thinking about” is analyzing by stepping outside and looking in. To “notice” is to be completely conscious of what is taking place in your body. Unfortunately, this kind of awareness is not something that is generally practiced in our culture.

Coaching Challenge: practice becoming aware of or noticing your Gremlin. Spend 10 minutes today in a still place. As you sit, record everything that you notice: What do you see? Hear? What are you touching? What do you smell? Taste? What thoughts are you having?

Career Pathway #110: “Now I Become Myself”

I knew that offering vocation coaching through a two-day intensive would bring me closer to my own clarity on my personal vocation. And, indeed it has.

After volunteering my services to this end, I bought a couple of books to offer some quiet perspective from others focused on this same work. “Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation” by Parker J. Palmer and, “Finding Your North Star: Claiming the Life you were Meant to Live” by Martha Beck. Both are fast becoming trusted and reassuring favorites of mine.

Of the many people who contacted me for vocation coaching, the youngest person was already familiar with Martha Beck’s book. I was delighted to see someone at the beginning point of her work life, so tuned in to purpose and finding ways to apply her specific talents that are consistent with her values and desires. Far more common is to make career choices and paths based on happenstance, the path of least resistance, or outside influence.

Besides borrowing my Pathway title from Parker Palmer’s second chapter, here are some additional words of his I’d like to share: “Vocation does not come from willfulness. It comes from listening. Vocation does not mean a goal that I pursue. It means a calling that I hear. I must listen to my life telling me who I am.” “True self, when violated, will always resist us, sometimes at great cost, holding our lives in check until we honor its truth.”

And, some words from Frederick Buechner, quoted in Palmer’s book: “Vocation: the place where your deep gladness meets the world’s deep need.” The world not only needs your talents, but your joy from expressing your talents through service.

Coaching Inquiries: What message do you want to share with the world? Is there a specific service to others that you are being drawn to consider? Are you looking for more personal meaning and fulfillment in your work? What is your next step in moving toward meaningful vocation?
