Connect With Touchstones

 Barbara Sher and Annie Gottlieb wrote about the importance of
focusing on ones "touchstones" when contemplating career shifts in their book,
"Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want"
Amazon. These touchstones are
the vital pieces that drive each of us to create meaningful and fulfilling work
and lifestyles for ourselves. By focusing on our touchstones, we get in touch
with our values, energy, and creative flow.
Consider your top values, interests, and abilities. If they are your true
touchstones, you will feel an extremely strong connection with them as you name
and ponder them. These then are the true and vital elements which must be
incorporated into future career planning if you are to live authentically, with
full expression of your potential.
If you have not already identified these for yourself, you can sort them out by
journaling through various questions. Where do I find true inspiration? What
work do I love so well that it really feels more like play? In what am I most
interested? What do I love to learn about, discuss, experience? What is vital to
my well-being? What feeds my energy and expands my world in hugely positive
ways?
Once youve narrowed your list to your very top touchstones, find time to
connect with them. Look for time and ways to grow these aspects in your personal
and professional lives. Open yourself to the real possibilities that a cursory
look might miss. Commit to allowing their expansion, and you will witness
powerful and life-changing shifts.
Are you willing to admit to yourself that you are capable of making vital and
purposeful shifts in your life? Are you willing to commit to addressing those
possibilities now? Can you name your touchstones? Which touchstone do you want
to expand for yourself in the next 60 days? What is your first step?
