Career Pathway #171:
Getting What You Expect

I was reminded once again this week how profoundly our
thinking impacts what we get. When I believe in myself and in the possibility
that opportunities will find me, they do! When I make space for new professional
relationships, they present themselves. When coaching clients are willing to
write new "stories" about themselves and explore their potential, their
realities shift in rewarding new ways.
That is why "beingness" is every bit as important as "doingness" in creating
what one wants in life. We can send powerful resumes, network with connected
colleagues, and spend hours on the job boards, but if our thinking isn't aligned
with possibility and a positive outlook, we're shooting ourselves in the foot.
If we are caught up in the negativity and disengagement of our current
positions, then it is an uphill climb to create the kind of positive energy that
will attract the changes we desire.
Shifting into new realities takes a willingness to let go of the undesirable
qualities of your present place in life and to fully engage with the exciting
qualities you are able to visualize for your future. If you want more
opportunity to use a particular talent, then begin using that talent now. Find
ways to focus on it, apply it, and polish it in any of the areas of your life
today, rather than focusing on the "lack" of it in your current scheme.
If you are feeling unfulfilled in your professional environment, do your part to
create new opportunities in your life each day. Go the library and check out
some books on CD or tape to listen to during your commute, discuss an individual
development plan with your manager to focus on your desired direction, or join a
professional organization for networking, training, and compelling conversation.
Where there is a will and an interest, there is a way to connect with more of
what we want. But, we have to be willing to let go of tired and resistant
negative thinking. If it's not serving you -- dump it and move on. Only you can
create that mind shift. And when you do, there's no telling what great things
will find your open door.
Coaching Inquiries: Are you telling yourself that what you want is possible? Are
you disciplined in stopping your negative thinking when you realize that you are
engaged in it? Do you find time to think about what you want in life, and open
yourself up to the energy of creating this shift? Are you willing to let go of
the complaining about what you don't have in order to replace it with gratitude
for what you do have?
